Oliver the Crossbreed Experiment?

He toured as a carnival sideshow and was touted as having unusual origins, possibly half man-half ape, from experiments of some kind. His teeth were pulled. Later he was sold to a research center and resided there 12 years before ariving at a primate sanctuary.

I found an article in Houston Chronicle on Oliver. "Swett, however, believes Oliver may be an ape hybrid, such as a cross between a chimpanzee and a gorilla or a chimpanzee and pygmy chimp. He also thinks Oliver may be a 'mutant chimp' or an altogether new species."
